| The Greenhill Shield |
[Left to right] Tony Targett (Chairman), Mike Phillis, (Programme Secretary), Betty Brooks (Membership Secretary),
Norma Knight (President)
CONGRATULATIONS to Betty Brooks and Mike Phillis who were recipients of the Greenhill Shield, each in their own right, at our December meeting. The Shield has been presented on 24 occasions, the first in 1982, and was initially given to adults for original research into the history of Nailsea and area. For many years there was also a junior version, the Pullan Plaque, awarded for individual or group local history projects. The Greenhill Shield is these days given for exceptional service to local history, and a trawl of past membership cards certainly indicates that both Betty and Mike were worthy recipients for 2008.

APOLOGIES to our members in Tickenham for omitting your village from the front cover of Pennant 45, “The Local History Journal of Backwell, Nailsea, Tickenham and Wraxall”. Sharp-eyed readers may also have noticed that the Journal is now printed by South West Print & Publishing based in Bridgwater.

| Mining Experts Visit Nailsea |
|
Members of the South Gloucestershire Mines Research Group visited Nailsea recently and were shown around the Old Glasshouse, Middle Engine and Farlers Pits in Nailsea. Familiar with a wealth of mining sites in Kingswood, Bristol, the group of about eight were delighted to explore our nationally important remains, promising to give the Society whatever help they could, particularly with the preservation and interpretation of the scheduled Middle Engine Pit.

| Scanning to Disk |
|
For many years now the Society has maintained an extensive photographic collection in a cupboard at the Scotch Horn Leisure Centre, a duplicate set to that held by the Library. A large part of the collection was put together by Society member David Cains, professional photographer, who systematically recorded the built environment of Nailsea and area. There are some two hundred A4 envelopes arranged alphabetically under subject matter. A few months ago the Committee decided to put the hundreds of photographs onto disks and consulted with archivists as to how they should be numbered and indexed for retrieval. The process of scanning is now under way starting with the bulky envelopes covering the Glassworks, Middle Engine Pit and Coate’s Cider. Three sets of disks will be made, two to be retained in Nailsea and one at the Somerset Record Office. A small selection of photographs not subject to copyright will eventually be made available on our Website.

| Annual General Meeting |
|
The AGM of the Nailsea & District Local History Society will be held on Monday October 12th starting at 7.30pm. The venue will be at Nailsea School, but with the new campus scheduled to open in September, the precise location of this and subsequent meetings is unknown. At the AGM it may be necessary for the Committee to announce a small increase in membership subscriptions for 2010, the first for ten years! With fewer books to publish our income from this previously profitable source has been greatly reduced; good speakers are demanding greater fees; and we have still to be advised of the room rental charges for Nailsea School and its facilities, including digital projection facilities which are increasingly being requested by our speakers.
